Chapter Five
The car was there for us bright and early. I glanced at my cell phone and turned it off. Mario threw me a look. “If they can’t reach me,” I said, “they can’t give me instructions, can they? I’ll turn it back on once we have your sister.”
Mario squeezed my forearm and got into the passenger side. I drove back in the direction of Washington. The closer I got, the more trepidation I felt. It was like I was driving right into the barrel of a gun. Not to mention, of course, that I could have lost my job for this…but I had already broken so many damn rules…hadn’t I?
“Are you all right?” Mario asked me after a while. I hadn’t said a word for miles.
“Why wouldn’t I be?”
“Are you…sore?” He smiled a little.
I think I blushed. “No…no…I’m fine.” That was a little white lie. It was a bit uncomfortable to sit.
“It will get better with practice,” he said, apparently not believing me.
“I said I’m fine.”
“Well, I’m starved. What time is it?”
“Seven thirty-six.”
“Wow,” Mario said, “you’re a regular Big Ben. Can we get breakfast? How long before we hit Washington?”
“We should be there in an hour or so, if we don’t hit rush hour.”
“Can we stop for food? I expended quite a bit of energy last night.” He smirked.
I rolled my eyes. “First place I see. You’re going to have to tell me the layout of this place where you think your sister is.”
“I’ll explain it all once we get there.”
“What do you mean by we?”
“I’m going in with you…you didn’t think you were going in there alone, did you, commando?”
“You don’t seem to get it…” I began.
“Neither do you, but that’s because you’re a hardheaded macho man who—”
“Me, hardheaded?”
“Yes…both heads, fortunately, but that’s another story.”
“Funny man.”
“I try. Listen, I’m going in with you, so give me a gun…or not.”
“You probably can’t even shoot.” I sounded like my father.
“Of course I can shoot. I’m not a schoolboy.”
“Oh…I know you’re not a schoolboy.”
It wasn’t meant to sound sexual, but it did.
Mario gave me a mischievous grin. “I’ll take that as a compliment.”
“You would.”
He found that funny, laughing as he pointed off the highway to the left. “There…a diner or something…let’s go.”
I found the exit and turned off the road. It was called Yummy Tummy. I made a face. “Are you sure you want to…?”
He was already out of the car. I followed him in, looking around me as I went. I took off my sunglasses and found him sitting in the corner already checking out the menu. The waitress came over and dumped two coffees in front of us. “I’ll be back to take your order in a jiff,” she said.
I leaned back in the corner and closed my eyes a minute. The waitress was suddenly back.
“I’ll have the deluxe breakfast,” Mario said, “with extra bacon. Brown toast.”
“And you?” She turned to me, pencil poised to write on her pad.
I wasn’t hungry at all. My shoulder was aching, my ass hurt, and my mind was in turmoil.
